India's 4th tallest waterfall at 310 metres. Everything you need to know about visiting Dudhsagar β best season, jeep safari, what to bring, and how to get there from Goa.
Dudhsagar β 'Sea of Milk' in Konkani β is one of India's most spectacular natural sights. At 310 metres, it's the country's fourth tallest waterfall, cascading in three dramatic tiers down the forested slopes of the Western Ghats, straddling the GoaβKarnataka border. A day trip here is a genuine adventure and among the most memorable things you can do in Goa.
Where Is Dudhsagar Located?
Dudhsagar Falls is located inside the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, about 60β70km from most North Goa hotels and around 50km from Margao in South Goa. The falls are on the Mandovi River and can be seen from the famous Dudhsagar railway viaduct β the train crossing with a waterfall backdrop is iconic.
The base point for the jeep safari is at Kulem (also called Colem), reachable by road from both North and South Goa. Private vehicles are not permitted inside the wildlife sanctuary on the forest trail β you must transfer to a shared government jeep at Kulem.
When to Visit Dudhsagar
The waterfall is most dramatic during and immediately after monsoon (JulyβOctober) when the full force of the season's rain thunders through. However, access is often restricted during heavy monsoon due to flooding and trail safety. The most accessible and popular season is October to February.
MayβJune: The waterfall may be reduced to a trickle in peak summer. Access is often restricted by the forest department. Always confirm current status before booking.
- Best overall: October to February β good flow, great weather, accessible
- Most dramatic: July to September β massive flow but access may be restricted
- Avoid: May to June β low water, often closed
- DecemberβJanuary: Busiest β expect crowds at the jeep safari point
The Jeep Safari β What to Expect
From Kulem, you board a shared jeep (8β10 passengers) for a 10km off-road trail through dense jungle. The trail is genuinely rough β expect bumps, river crossings, and mud. The jeep ride itself is exciting and most visitors rate it as a highlight of the trip. Duration is about 30β40 minutes each way.
The jeep safari costs βΉ600 per person (2026 rates) paid at the Kulem forest office. This is separate from your taxi fare to get to Kulem. You cannot bypass the safari β private vehicles are not allowed on the forest trail under any circumstances.
What to Bring
- Swimwear and a quick-dry towel β swimming in the pool at the base is the highlight
- Waterproof bag or dry sack for your phone and valuables
- Change of dry clothes β you will get wet
- Water bottles and snacks β facilities at the base are limited
- Cash for jeep safari (βΉ600/person), lunch, and tips β no UPI at the forest office
- Sturdy footwear β the base area is rocky and slippery when wet
- Sunscreen and insect repellent for the jeep trail through jungle
